That sounds great doesn’t it ?

But also so very true. Sit three photographers in front of the same subject and you’ll get three different images. You see it a lot in artists group portrait sessions. Half a dozen artists sitting around one naked model,one will produce a perfect rendering of the person in front of them and another will come up with a pacaso style image with three noses and a dog thrown in for good measure.I suppose it’s that old adage that if were all the same the world would be a boring place, but we could never be all the same could we ?

I’m actually quoting Dave Stewart of eurythmics fame, who I believe in turn was quoting someone else. Dave is an incredibly creative person, his “lens” it appears to me, is not ground purely by what’s happened to him by chance, rather he goes out of his way to find people and experiences that colour his world and in turn enhance his creativity. Great things happen when your open to new people and experiences. The more inspiration we take onboard the greater the pool we have to draw from when needed.

Paris 2011

August 1st 11.02am local time, Val and I arrive at The Gare du Nord, Paris. Other passengers bustling here and there, an armed army presence and all is well. With the exception of one day to be spent at Versailles our five day stay is to be spent here in the city. I have taken the measure of bringing along with me my old Nikon D70 and my 50m prime lens. Lighter than everything else in my camera bag, it makes for a more comfortable carry on the long days of walking one tends to do on these type of breaks, with the added bonus of forcing me to see images in a slightly different way ( the lack of zoom makes you think a little more before you take the shot )It is said that Parisians love photography and it’s not hard to understand why as the city is designed down to every detail for it’s aesthetic value, though they don’t necessarily keep it repaired it always seems to be clean, the shots I’d love to be doing while I’m here are they empty steps lit by street lights and the early morning wet pavements, however getting up early enough for that kind of shot on a five day break is never gonna happen, even if I could convince Val it was a good idea I doubt I could get my sorry arse out of bed that early,So I find images where I can, dragging a modal around this city would reap great results, the richness of it’s backdrops and our subconscious links to them offers shot after shot. Lack of model not withstanding here are a few of the images I took whilst there.

Jurassic Coast

Back in the day, when I was but a mere youth I was rather heavily into the artwork of Roger Dean. Back then I found his images fascinating, the wealth and breadth of his visions, creating worlds that seamingly had on place in our own. As I get older and have become more traveled I find myself coming across places that have a distinctly ”Roger Dean” look to them.

The images above were taken recently on what is known as the Jurassic coast, just east of Weymouth. I’m not sure weather I see images like this because I look for the Roger Dean in everything or because they just happen to be there. Its a chicken and egg situation.

If a tree falls in a forest with no one to hear it, does it make a sound?

If the butterfly flaps its wings in Brasil does a orphan boy steal a loaf of bread in West Bromwich?

Does this shot look set up to you ?

It does to me and I know it wasn’t, whilst sorting though some old files last week I found some of our holiday photographs, as tempting as it is it show you semi naked pictures of Val on a beech I’ve opted for living just a little longer and offer you this shot of a couple of muzos in Cuba, bizarrely these guys weren’t the only instrument carrying locals we saw that day but of a hand full of shots this is the one that worked, I love the woman reading her book, can’t for the life of me decide what her story is; is she a tourist taking five minutes in the shade or a local worker of some sort on a lunch break.Obviously we’ll never know but thats the beauty of this type of shot isn’t it catching people as they go about their day lives.

Found this image lurking around and thought I’d share it with you, this guy was alone at the side of the road in a glen in Scotland last year.
I say alone , alone in fact except for the 20 or so tourists that were watching.
