It’s seems to me that with every year that passes and every remembrance day that arrives, the reason for remembering the sacrifice made by our armed forces becomes more acute, more pronounced and all the more sad. So this remembrance let us all take a humble moment to reflect on just how lucky we all are and why we are so lucky.

That sounds great doesn’t it ?

But also so very true. Sit three photographers in front of the same subject and you’ll get three different images. You see it a lot in artists group portrait sessions. Half a dozen artists sitting around one naked model,one will produce a perfect rendering of the person in front of them and another will come up with a pacaso style image with three noses and a dog thrown in for good measure.I suppose it’s that old adage that if were all the same the world would be a boring place, but we could never be all the same could we ?

I’m actually quoting Dave Stewart of eurythmics fame, who I believe in turn was quoting someone else. Dave is an incredibly creative person, his “lens” it appears to me, is not ground purely by what’s happened to him by chance, rather he goes out of his way to find people and experiences that colour his world and in turn enhance his creativity. Great things happen when your open to new people and experiences. The more inspiration we take onboard the greater the pool we have to draw from when needed.
If your wondering what your seeing in the image above, it’s an inverted shot of the underneath of an elevated section of the Paris metro.

Lakes I see no lakes …

Val and I took a few day out last week for a well earned break in the Lakes, as with our Paris break earlier in the year I decided the old D70 and 50mm prime lens was the way forward. Being light enough for those long walks, that was of cause until I actually came to taking pictures and the vastness of the landscape just couldn’t be captured as I wanted.
So I went in search of something to shoot with a 50m prime lens.

Well it’s been a while, I’ve been so busy other the last few weeks I haven’t had chance to add anything here.So in oder to put that right here’s a sample of images that were part of an assignment for singer/songwriter Arron Luther.I’ve worked with Arron before and it’s always a pleasure, he always has a good idea of what he’s after which makes the creative process for me far easier. The shoot took place on the roof of Madhouse Studios in Birmingham just as the sun was going down.

Wedding connections wedding faryre, Merry Hill

This weekend Val and I will be taking part in this years Wedding connections wedding faryre, Merry Hill, so if your planning your wedding at the moment why not pop along and say hi we would love to meet you or if you just feel the need to bring us hot tea and cream cakes it would be great too. The fayre is on all weekend so theres plenty of time to come along and visit this truly fabulous event.

Shot for a calender, well give me a year.

Dear friends, as you may already know that a couple of months ago I was approached to do a calender in aid of Haven breast cancer support. The original plan was to get it shot and printed in time for next year, however due to time constraints and venue availability we have had to do a slight rethink and now we are shooting with 2013 in mind. It has to be said this is actually a more favorable time scale as we can now shot as the months pass giving us seasonal options. The images here are from the most resent shoot, my approach here was to shoot a normal portraiture shoot and setting up images as I went along that would work for the calender.

Paris 2011

August 1st 11.02am local time, Val and I arrive at The Gare du Nord, Paris. Other passengers bustling here and there, an armed army presence and all is well. With the exception of one day to be spent at Versailles our five day stay is to be spent here in the city. I have taken the measure of bringing along with me my old Nikon D70 and my 50m prime lens. Lighter than everything else in my camera bag, it makes for a more comfortable carry on the long days of walking one tends to do on these type of breaks, with the added bonus of forcing me to see images in a slightly different way ( the lack of zoom makes you think a little more before you take the shot )It is said that Parisians love photography and it’s not hard to understand why as the city is designed down to every detail for it’s aesthetic value, though they don’t necessarily keep it repaired it always seems to be clean, the shots I’d love to be doing while I’m here are they empty steps lit by street lights and the early morning wet pavements, however getting up early enough for that kind of shot on a five day break is never gonna happen, even if I could convince Val it was a good idea I doubt I could get my sorry arse out of bed that early,So I find images where I can, dragging a modal around this city would reap great results, the richness of it’s backdrops and our subconscious links to them offers shot after shot. Lack of model not withstanding here are a few of the images I took whilst there.

I have spent the last few months looking for cool locations in and around Birmingham with the purpose of using them as backdrops for portraiture shoots.Last weekend Val and I gave our first location a try out. The above images are the result.
